Search engines, meta tags an all that stuff...
Jan 11, 2018 15:18

Alright there,

So is anyone in the know with regards to getting web sites a decent position on search engines at all? or know of a a real good resource, free of course that could help out..
To be honest I'm not super fussed but was considering trying to get my web site active again, if it's easy and not too time consuming then I might have a go but if it's gonna give me headaches then I'll just leave it be. My web site has dropped from pertty much the top of google to being unfindable in a subject search, something has changed or I did something wrong but it has disappeared. I would say it's had it's day and that I'm past caring but after the effort that been put in by Huw and everyone here it seems wasteful to just let the web site disappear and just be unfindable....if the site itself isn't very findable then the forum will never re-grow, I've had a number of timewasters join and people that are using facetwitter more but that's it really. It was meant to be a test forum I suppose but if people were to find it who knows!
It is found on or around page 5 on Bing and Yahoo but do they matter these days?
So any suggestions or knowhow at all would be great smile by the way though. I'm not willing to make a facetwitter page to advertise the site.

it's possible that because you have require registration turned on that any search engines won't be able to index any of your content since they will be unable to see it smile
Your home page shows up on the first page of google if you search for 'carp fishing forum' which is ok

That's so weird, I've not used that search for yonks and you're right it's there..if you search 'carp fishing' it doesn't come up at all...something needs a little refining I guess.
I'm only really thinking of the homepage because there's a link to the forum on there anyway but you caught me out there, ive not tried that particular search as long as I can remember shy I was wondering how the hell people were finding the forum bigsmile

I would imagine 'carp fishing' is a fairly common term so would get a lot of index pages

Yea more so that carp fishing forum, made a slight adjustment to the title tag...so surprised I didn't spot that but I guess I was so obsessed with trying to make the carp fishing search work that I hadn't tried anything else for ages, well spotted by you and well missed by me blush

Oi oi all quiet on here, a good thing?
Definitely a mystery to me this is still, I need to have a deep look on the interweb for advice and a hard look at the homepage as I can't understand the poor returns on the searches for the site as a whole, I'd think it had been banned if not for the carp fishing forum returns, headscratcher bigeyes

it may just need a bit more content, it is quite a bare home page so not much to give the search engines to decide what it is about. Perhaps you should add a small about section under the image explaining it's about carp fishing

Alright all...just a quickie for you!
I've decided to stop being lazy and do a bit of work on my web site, I've been letting it rot for a while which isn't too good..
Anyway...am I right in thinking than I can do away with these meta tags does anyone know, I guess they're just something that Frontpage used to add to new pages as I made them? I can't imagine that they're of any use at all....what do you reckon, dump em?
