This is mostly because the images are not directly linkable they are streamed to the browser from the server, so the browser does not know exactly what format it should be, so takes a guess
Just see how image format change when I right click the image and save. In chrome, the thumbnail saves as bmp. Full image as jfif. In edge both thumb and image saves as png. But the original format was jpg. Strange.
